Community Engagement
Through outreach programs and partnerships, we promote the powerful, positive impact of sport in the New Orleans community and beyond.
The Tulane Center for Sport is proud to serve as the primary education partner for The Starting Block, an innovative program jointly created by the Arnie D. Fielkow Family and the Edgar "Dooky" Jr. & Leah Chase Family Foundation. The program features an 18-month course designed to build impactful relationships between multicultural and multi-faith communities in Greater New Orleans through the lens of practical learning and career building for high school students interested in pursuing professions within the sports industry.
The Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine operates the Athletic Training Outreach Program, which taps directly into the New Orleans community. Athletic trainers work with more than 15 local high schools to provide health physicals and sports medicine care and coverage, often at no cost.
The Tulane Sports Law Program and Center for Sport, in partnership with the New Orleans Major League Baseball Youth Academy, engage with youth participants of MLB youth academies across the country. Virtual courses allow academy participants ages 13 to 18 to learn the business side of baseball. The program also brings in guest speakers, including sports agents, athletes and baseball executives, to teach and inspire students.
The Center for Sport collaborates with the AthLife Foundation, an industry leading national Non-Profit organization to provide grants, training, and valuable resources to schools in order to create and develop Academic Athletic Coach staff positions.
The partnership between Tulane’s Sports Law Program and Special Olympics led to the first Unified Sports Intramural leagues in the state, as well as the inaugural Tulane-Special Olympics New Orleans field day in 2017.
Tulane University and Tulane Athletics are partnered with Athletes for Hope to educate, inspire and connect student athletes with local charities.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recognizes Tulane Center for Sport as one of the first organizations to join the National Youth Sports Strategy(NYSS) Champion program. NYSS aims to unite U.S. youth sports culture around a shared vision: that one day all youth will have the opportunity, motivation, and access to play sports — regardless of their race, ethnicity, sex, ability, or ZIP code.
