OVERVIEW
Sports Medicine Teams have long adopted the philosophy of patient-centered care, in which a team of healthcare professionals work together to improve patient outcomes and overall quality. Patient-centered care is vital to sports medicine in that each evaluation, rehab plan, and return to play decision can have lasting effects on an athlete. The collaboration of healthcare professionals in caring for the overhead athlete is increasingly common. The collaborative discussions of evidence-based prevention exercises/techniques, enhanced tools/tips for on-field evaluation, and transitioning from generic exercises to sport specific exercise outside of a clinic setting will be a benefit in the way of athlete care.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Sports Medicine healthcare professionals should acquire skills required to work with overhead athletes over a long period of time, in collaboration with a team of healthcare professionals, addressing everything from injury prevention to rehabilitation and athlete performance. This includes the proper prevention exercises/techniques for the overhead athlete, being able to appropriately evaluate injuries on-field, using enhanced tools/tips from physicians, and expanding the understanding of rehab and the return to play process of overhead athletes including a transition from generic exercises to sport specific exercise outside of a clinic setting.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this activity, attendees should be better able to effectively…
- Manage care of athletes and transition that care, as appropriate, to the physician for definitive treatment.
- Manage return to sport communication, rehabilitation, and clearance for the physician to the appropriate team healthcare provider.
- Discuss the kinetic chain as it relates to the overhead athlete.
- Describe exercises to improve strength and power in the overhead athlete.
- Identify common upper extremity injuries in contact sports.
