HELPING OUT: Green Wave Athletics Donates Materials to the Tulane Medical Center
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University Athletics stepped up in a big way to battle the COVID-19 pandemic by donating materials to the Tulane Medical Center to support doctors and nurses that are providing care to those in need throughout Southern Louisiana.
With area hospitals encountering a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), the Green Wave Athletics Training staff teamed up with the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine (TISM) to donate 51 boxes of gloves and 200 procedure masks.
"I think everyone was very excited about this," Tulane Director of Sports Medicine and Team Physician Gregory Stewart said. "Obviously Troy (Dannen) and the department of athletics was very willing to do something. This is all new for all of us and we are just trying to do the best we can with what we have and I think that's what Troy and the department of athletics have done."
Over the past two days, Green Wave Athletics and TISM have provided shipments of supplies to the Tulane Medical Center to help doctors and nurses that have worked tirelessly to stop the spread of COVID-19.
"Addressing the need for PPE for first responders and in our health system the priority for our society during this crisis," Tulane Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. "With no collegiate athletics for the time being, Tulane and other universities have the ability and obligation to address this need, and we are uniquely positioned to do just that."
In addition to PPE materials, Green Wave Athletics and TISM have donated 1,000 hand sanitizer wipes, eight bottles of hand sanitizer and the remainder of its Powerade supply which includes 100 cases of product.
"Donating our Powerade supply not only helps the general cause, but it also will help the doctors and nurses while they are working on long shifts," Tulane Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine Alby Lindon said.
The Green Wave equipment staff also played a major role in the athletic department's donation, as it provided 1,000 pieces of apparel and 100 pairs of shoes.
"These are the kind of things that the health care providers that are on the front line need," Stewart said.
