INTENDED AUDIENCE

Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists, Allied Healthcare Professionals

OVERVIEW

Athletes sustain acute injuries on the field, providing very limited time to for the sports medicine team on-site to evaluate the injury. The return to play decision made after a brief evaluation, can have lasting effects on an athlete. The incorporation of ultrasound imaging into injury evaluation in real time is becoming increasingly common. The discussions of proper identification of anatomy, physiology, and pathology in ultrasound imaging and enhancing ultrasound skills will be a benefit in the way of injury evaluation and athlete care.

STATEMENT OF NEED

Musculoskeletal healthcare professionals should acquire the knowledge and skills to utilize ultrasound imaging for evaluation of injuries. By gaining or enhancing skills associated with the use of ultrasound imaging, musculoskeletal healthcare professionals will be able to properly evaluate injuries and proper care will be provided for patients throughout the progression of the injury cycle. This includes basic functions of the ultrasound machine and identification of anatomy, physiology, and pathology on images produced by ultrasound.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees should be better able to effectively...

•  Describe how ultrasound functions to create images.

•  Demonstrate ability to appropriately and safely operate an ultrasound unit.

•  Identify basic musculoskeletal anatomy and pathology.

•  Direct appropriate treatments with the use of ultrasound guidance.

•  Apply ultrasound into the clinic and real-world situations.

•  Identify potentially dangerous pathology.

•  Describe proper storage and documentation of ultrasound images.
